Young’s Hotel opens.
November 6, 1860
Architect: William Washburn. Originally the Cornhill Coffee House and operated by George Young, it is located at today’s 11 Court Square. An addition is built in 1882. Guests include presidents Grant, Taft, and Coolidge. Room 16 becomes the scene of as many as 300 weddings per year, by couples who receive their marriage licenses at nearby City Hall and performed by assistant city registrar “Judge” James O’Fallon. The hotel closes in 1927 and is torn down in 1936.
